Canoeing holidays – Vltava river

Home Canoeing holidays – Vltava river
Canoeing holidays on the majestic Vltava river in the southern part of Czechia

A two-to six days guided canoeing trip on the majestic Moldau! The czech name of this impressive river is Vltava. A river with its origin in southern Bohemia. On both sides of the border between South Bohemia and Bavaria lies an area of more than 1630 km2 : the Bohemian Forest. The area is by far the largest forest of Central Europe and is also known as the "green roof of Europe". In the heart of the area, lies the UNESCO biosphere reserve Sumava (= rustling forest), a large forest with trees up to 50 m high and 400 years old. The highest peak is Plechý. With it's 1378 m it announces the proximity to the Alps.

We organize 4-day and 6-day (101 km from Soumarský to Boršov) canoe trips on the river Vltava. Right below you can read the 6-day program from day to day.

Itinerary

Day 1: Lenora - Soumarský most

Arrival at Soumarský most, check-in (campsite, hotel / guest-house), set up a tent. Then a meeting with the guide and other participants will follow. First you go by train to Lenora and then do the first short canoe-trip to Soumarský most. Here the river squirms through deep woods and meadows. This first tour is perfectly suited to practice the paddle techniques. At low water it's not possible to canoe in this section and an optional excursion to the primeval forest Boubinsky is organized.

  • Overnight stay: campsite in Soumarský most
  • Distance: 7 km

Day 2: Soumarský most – Nová Pec (Vyšší Brod)

When you wake up and enjoy breakfast together you step into your canoe again. Today the river squirms quite a lot., but the splendor and unspoiled beauty of nature makes it all worthwhile. At Nová Pec the reservoir Lipno starts. Paddling on the Lipno lake is monotonous and heavy, so you step out of your boat and take the train to Vyšší Brod.

  • Overnight stay: campsite at Vyšší Brod
  • Distance: 10 km

Day 3: Vyšší Brod – Rožmberk - Branná

Arriving in the town Vyšší Brod (campsite) where you can see a beautiful Gothic cloister from the 13th century before the start of the canoe trip. Full impressions of the medieval splendor you paddle 10 km in calm water without much rapid parts. On the forest-rich road rises Castle Rožmberkafter a steep slope. As impressive as half a century ago. For an extensive tour of the exhibition of historical furniture and weapons you will surely have to go inside.
Last 10 km from Rožmberk to Branná last approx. 2 hours.

  • Overnight stay: campsite Branná
  • Distance: 20 km

Day 4: Branná - campsite Nové Spolí near Český Krumlov

After sleeping on the cozy campsite you go back on the water. First you paddle by large meanders in the forested landscape. Do not forget to greet the other canoers Ahoy! On your way you can take a stop in the old village Zátoň. A small walk through this village is worth your while. Since the 13th century a city wall remained preserved. Back on the water you paddle for a few more hours until the next campsite in Nove Spolí.
In the evening you should visit Český Krumlov It's a 15 minute walk (over a beautiful walking-bridge) to the city centre. The castle with a unique theater- and mask-room, gardens and picturesque streets captivates everyone, even more so when one realizes how unique the location of this city (lying in the river curve of the Vltava) is. In the evening there are outdoor theater shows in the castle park.

  • Overnight stay: campsite in Nové Spolí near Český Krumlov
  • Distance: 13 km

Day 5: Nové Spolí - campsite Zlatá Koruna

Today you visit Český Krumlov again, but this time not by canoe. You will see all these buildings from a different perspective. Quite a bit further you arrive at another village also dominated by robust buildings: Zlatá Koruna. It is a village where a 13th century Cistercian monastery stands. You got plenty of time to taste the cosiness of this village, cause you will be staying a night on the campsite in Zlatá Koruna.

  • Overnight stay: campsite in Zlatá Koruna
  • Distance: 17 km

Day 6: Zlatá Koruna - campsite Boršov
This day you'll canoe through the peaceful nature of Blanský woods, a sloping hill of the Bohemian Forest. One of the most gorgeous views of this day will be the castle ruins Dívčí kámen from the 14th century. Not far from here is also a Celtic oppidum. On the spot where a Celtic home once was now only remain the stone fundamentals. A few miles further along the way there are other ruins: Maškovec, but these ruins are hardly visible. On the other hand the ruins do offer a beautiful view of the river. You'll disembark on the campsite at the characteristic village: Boršov nad Vltavou.

  • Overnight stay: none
  • Distance: 19 km
